What is hospitality in the Christian sense?
Hospitality emphasizes welcoming strangers, caring for those in need, and showing kindness without expecting anything in return. Everyone in the world is a child of God, regardless of birthplace or condition.
What does our United Methodist Church say about hospitality?
The UMC approach to hospitality is summarized by these core points:
- Radical Hospitality: This is an intentional, Christ-like love that goes beyond simple greeting to create an "unceasingly invitational posture" toward others.
- Wesleyan Roots: Hospitality is viewed as a "biblical mandate" and a core practice of Christian discipleship modeled after John Wesley's emphasis on reaching those at the margins of society.
- Welcoming the Sojourner: The church maintains a strong official stance on welcoming immigrants and refugees, treating them as native-born citizens regardless of their legal status.
- The Mission of the Church: Seeking and welcoming persons is defined in the Book of Discipline as the primary first step in the cycle of making disciples.
What does the Bible say about hospitality?
Scriptures related to hospitality:
- Romans 12:13 – “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
- Hebrews 13:2 – “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
- 1 Peter 4:9 – “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”
- Matthew 25:35 – “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
- Luke 14:12-14 – Then he turned to his host. “When you put on a luncheon or a banquet,” he said, “don’t invite your friends, ... Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. Then at the resurrection of the righteous, God will reward you for inviting those who could not repay you.”
What can we do at Williamsville UMC to welcome visitors?
- Greet newcomers warmly by standing, smiling, and offering a friendly introduction—just as you would welcome someone into your own home.
- Serve as a Hospitality Team member to welcome guests at the entrance, answer questions, and help them feel comfortable.
- Personalize your greeting by expressing genuine excitement that guests are present and helping as needed.
- Escort visitors to key areas—such as the sanctuary, restrooms, children’s space, or coffee station—instead of only pointing the way.
- Give guests a welcome packet with information about the church, upcoming events, and a small token of appreciation.
- Follow up with guests who have shared their contact information by sending a note or making a call to thank them and invite them back.
- Encourage all members to introduce themselves to new faces and invite them to participate in conversations or church activities.
- Help maintain a welcoming environment by keeping spaces tidy, ensuring signage is clear, and making the church inviting to all ages and backgrounds.
